How to prepare apartment contents for storage
- Two weeks before: pack what is not in daily use, take large furniture apart and photograph it. Every box gets a number and a contents list, which is what will save you from hunting for the kettle among 60 boxes.
- Mattresses and sofas: wrap in a breathable cover, not sealed plastic, so they do not collect moisture over a Jerusalem winter.
- Fridge and washing machine: empty, clean and dry them two days before the move, and leave the door slightly open during storage.
- On moving day: heavy and large items go in first, against the back wall. Whatever you may need during storage stays near the door, and leave a walkway between the stacks.
- What not to bring: fresh or perishable food, flammable and hazardous materials, gas, fuel, plants and animals.
